Fly on the Wall Press is thrilled to announce the acquisition of world exclusive rights to Amy Lilwall's highly anticipated second novel, "The Water That May Come." This groundbreaking work of speculative fiction is set to make waves in the literary world upon its release in October 2025.
About the Book
"The Water That May Come" presents a harrowing vision of a Britain on the brink of environmental catastrophe. As rising seas threaten to engulf the nation, four lives hang in the balance:
- Pinko, a privileged heir clinging to decadence
- Jane, a working-class veterinary nurse racing to reunite her fractured family
- Ashleigh, Jane's pregnant teenage daughter
- Gavin, a humble young artist
With sanctuary beckoning from across the Channel, each character faces impossible choices in this race for survival. Lilwall's novel turns a critical lens on Britain's immigration debate, blurring borders and challenging notions of identity and belonging.
About the Author
Born and raised in the South East of England, Lilwall spent several years teaching English in France before returning to the UK to complete her PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Kent. Now a teacher in Creative Writing at the University of Lincoln, she has a passion for imagining odd scenarios and alternative realities, often exploring themes of power imbalance and injustice in her work.
Lilwall's debut novel, "The Biggerers," (Point Blank, One World) established her as a voice to watch in speculative fiction. She co-produces the "On Silence" literary podcast and serves as a guest editor for "The Lit" literary journal.
"The Water That May Come" represents a culmination of Lilwall's interests and experiences. The novel's premise imagines a scenario where UK citizens become refugees, turning the current immigration crisis on its head. It's a thought-provoking exploration of a post-Brexit Europe shunning the UK in the face of natural disaster, where only 'functioning', law-abiding, heterosexual families are granted asylum.
Author's Insight
Reflecting on her latest work, Lilwall shares, "The hint of magic in this story emphasises the perceived implausibility of a situation where UK citizens are forced to leave their homeland, yet it has happened and will happen again."
She adds, "Someone who likes quirky, character-driven narratives would enjoy 'The Water That May Come'. There is a mystery at its heart and a reader must connect the dots in order to reach the satisfying ending."
In a future where we all may become strangers, this novel poses the ultimate question: how far would you go to stay afloat? "The Water That May Come" (9781915789440) is scheduled for release on the 1st of October 2025.
