FLY ON THE WALL PRESS
Sales Intern
7-Day Work Placement*
We acknowledge support from the 404 Ink Bursary towards this internship scheme.
*39 hours in total. Working days/hours as below can be flexible, though the role must be completed by Friday 31st of July.
About Us
Fly on the Wall Press is an independent publishing house bringing bold, socially-engaged fiction, poetry and non-fiction to readers. As a small, close-knit team, everyone who joins us gets hands-on exposure to the real, day-to-day work of getting books in front of readers and booksellers. This is a remote experience and you’ll be working with Managing Director Isabelle Kenyon.
The Role
We're looking for a proactive, detail-oriented Sales Intern to join us for a 7-day placement. You'll work directly on live sales and marketing tasks across our list, learning how a small publisher builds relationships with booksellers, manages book metadata, and gets titles noticed by retailers. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone considering a career in publishing, sales, or marketing to see the industry from the inside.
Tasks will be introduced and supported by our team throughout the week so no prior publishing experience is required, just curiosity, care with detail, and good written communication.
What You'll Be Doing
Across the week you'll rotate through the core areas of our sales operation:
DAY 1 | Book Metadata & Stison • Get introduced to Stison, our warehouse metadata platform, and learn how title, format, ISBN and publication data flows through to bookshops worldwide. • Shadow the process for adding a new title to Stison, including contributor details, product forms and categorisation. |
DAY 2 | Metadata & Distribution • Update book metadata in our Google Sheets system, including BISAC codes, descriptions and author information. • Prepare accurate metadata for our ebook aggregator, Faber Factory, who distribute our titles to retailers worldwide. • Support with sending confirmed ISBN data on to Inpress, who list our books on Amazon. |
DAY 3 | Waterstones & Bookseller Outreach • Learn how we pitch forthcoming proof copies to Waterstones, pulling accurate title information from our metadata sheet and website. • Help draft outreach emails offering proofs, and process bookseller responses as they come in. • Qualify bookseller interest — role, likelihood of reviewing or stocking the title — and log this accurately. |
DAY 5-6 | Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) • Identify forthcoming titles available as ARCs and gather the key details needed to pitch them. • Support with contacting booksellers directly, introducing titles and offering advance copies. • Maintain our marketing spreadsheets, accurately recording contacts, responses, dispatch dates and follow-ups. |
DAY 7 | Amazon Content & Wrap-Up • Create Amazon A+ content images (one 900x300px hero image and three 300x300px images) for a title using Canva/Adobe Express. • Prepare and send finished assets to our distribution partner for upload to our Amazon listings. • Wrap up outstanding follow-ups from the week and share a short reflection in video short form on what you've learned with the team for our social media! |
What We're Looking For
• A genuine interest in books, publishing or the creative industries.
• Excellent attention to detail, especially when handling data and spreadsheets.
• Confident, friendly written communication as you'll be helping draft emails to booksellers.
• Comfortable picking up new systems and software quickly.
• Organised, and able to manage a few different tasks across the week.
What You'll Gain
• Real, hands-on experience across sales, metadata and bookseller relations at an independent publisher.
• Direct mentoring from our small team throughout the placement.
• A genuine reference and insight into day-to-day publishing sales work.
