Celebrating Libraries, Authors, and Community Engagement

Fly on the Wall Press is thrilled to announce the "Fly to Your Local Library" campaign, a new initiative aimed at supporting UK libraries and promoting the works of Fly on the Wall Press authors. Scheduled for Wednesday, 28th August 2024, this campaign seeks to highlight the vital role that libraries play in our communities as vital community hubs, offering free access to books and fostering connections among people in all groups.

The campaign encourages readers to visit their local libraries, discover new books, and engage with literature in meaningful ways. By focusing on Fly on the Wall Press titles, the campaign also aims to spotlight the diverse stories published by this Small Press of the Year winner (2024, North, British Book Awards).

As our best-selling author Alice Fowler expresses, “I am very grateful for great support from Surrey Libraries for my collection of short stories, The Truth Has Arms and Legs, published by FOTW in 2023. I’ve enjoyed giving talks at Guildford and Woking libraries, and am excited to be judging a short story competition for young writers, run by Guildford and Horsley libraries, in the autumn.” She goes on to explain, “I have a deep personal connection to libraries, both as a reader and a writer. As a child, growing up in a small town without a lot to do, I spent a lot of time in the tiny branch library near my home, reading through the shelves. Libraries open up new worlds, enabling everyone, whatever their circumstances, to learn and explore. I’m still a huge library fan, taking books out almost every week. I certainly would not be a writer had I not been lucky enough to spend so much time in a library as a child.”

The "Fly to Your Local Library" campaign also underscores the importance of the Public Lending Right (PLR) scheme, which ensures authors are compensated when their books are borrowed from libraries. This initiative not only supports the financial well-being of authors but also encourages more readers to explore new works.

On the campaign day, EVERYONE is encouraged to visit their local libraries and share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #FlyToLibraries. Whether it's borrowing a Fly on the Wall Press book, discovering a new favourite author, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, everyone is invited to be part of this celebration. Fly on the Wall Press authors will also be actively participating, visiting libraries, and sharing their own stories and experiences.
