Poet Interview: McKayla DeBonis

McKayla DeBonis was born February 23rd, 1998. She currently lives in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Her passion for writing developed early in life and her first official sharing of her work can be found in her book, which was published in May 2017.

Strongly influenced by her Mother, she has always been a bookworm, and she spends her free time devouring words.

Isabelle: Why did you start writing?

McKayla: I started writing because to me, it's a form of release, from all the emotions that i carry in my life. I write for myself, to express myself and to feel like a weight has been lifted.

Isabelle: How would you describe your writing style?

McKayla: My writing style can be described as modern free verse poetry: a style making a huge way in the world, by breaking all the classical rules of poetry.

Isabelle: How do you approach self publishing and promoting, and what are the rewards and hardships about the process?

McKayla: Approaching self-publishing is easy because it is done in your own time and only you call the shots!

Promoting your self-published work though can be very tough because you are doing it by yourself, but it's very rewarding because the people that I reach with my work just really makes me remember why I started in the first place -not that I wouldn't reach them if I was published traditionally, but its just different because to me its more personal. Overall, I'm so happy I published my work, even though it can be a tough balance.

Isabelle: If you had to sum up your book 'Bones in the Garden' in only one sentence, what would you say?

McKayla: It is so tough to sum up my work in just one word because it is both heartbreaking and uplifting!

Isabelle: Which writers do you admire the most?

McKayla: Wow another tough question. I really have so so many but I would say Jennae Cecila because she is the one who introduced me to self publishing and she helped me with so much. She truly is an amazing and inspiring woman! Also I look up to Rupi because lets face it, her work can truly bring tears to your eyes!

Isabelle: What are you working on at the moment?

McKayla: I am currently working on a young adult novel, the genre is dystopian. Who knows when it'll be done but it keeps me busy and i can't wait for the world to see it!
